Session Description: Defining how to be a leader has varied throughout history. Initial theories suggested that a person’s traits, technical skills, or knowledge qualified them as a leader. More recently, leadership theory has focused on how well leaders form relationships with their followers. Traditionally, these relationship theories may be referred to as transformational, servant, transactional, or authentic leaders. An evolving relationship leadership theory, inclusive leadership, is relevant to nursing leaders as it can positively affect employee engagement, patient and organizational outcomes, and turnover intention. This discussion will review traditional leadership theories and introduce the characteristics, benefits, and implementation of inclusive leadership.
